Examinations

In all BA degree programs the concept of one big final examination on which everything depends has been abandoned in favor of smaller exams taken at different times during the program. Accordingly there are module part examinations covering one course within a module, or module examinations in which all courses within a module are examined together.

There are different forms of examination (e.g. expository paper, written test, seminar paper, presentation ...). The table at the end of the Examination and Degree Regulations shows how each course or module will be examined. A description of the different forms of examination can be found in sections 16 und 17 of the Examination and Degree Regulations.

In addition to taking examinations, students will be expected to perform in other ways. This performance is not graded, and what form it takes will depend on the teacher's concept of the course; it may include, for instance, regular and active participation, short presentations, practical exercises, etc. On the one hand this performance constitutes the student's contribution to the joint study of a topic in the course, and on the other hand it can be regarded as practice for examinations. Students are free to perform without the pressure of having to earn good grades.

Students have to enroll for each examination separately. Each semester you need to do the following things, in this order:

  1. Plan the semester with the aid of the Examination and Degree Regulations and the LSF online portal.
  2. Set up your timetable.
  3. Enroll for your courses within the enrollment period.
  4. Take note of the course and examination requirements which will be explained in each course at the beginning of the semester.
! The course description may contain some recommendations, such as preparatory reading. These are categorical recommendations and should be considered as a condition of admission to the course!
  5. Decide in which courses you wish to be examined. (As a rule this will be all courses, but you are free to attend more than the required number of courses if you wish).
  6. Enroll for your examinations within the enrollment period.
  7. Do the examinations.
  8. Towards the end of the vacation look for your exam results in LSF.

Enrollment for each examination is compulsory. This means that if you do not turn up for an examination it will be registered as failed.
If you are prevented by illness from taking an examination, you must inform the examiner without delay AND you must submit a medical certificate. For more information, see the Website of the Examination Office.
